People Closing Deal

In 2008, the volume of foreign direct investments in Romania reached EURO 9024 million, registering a 24.4% increase as against the previous year (EURO 7.250 million).

Considering the period 1990-2008, the volume of FDI attracted by Romania last year is very close to the peak reached in 2006, with only EURO 36 million less than record value of EURO 9060 million. Furthermore, in 2006, aside BCR privatization, foreign direct investments reached EURO 6900 million, thus it is justified to consider the year 2008 as an exceptional year in attracting FDI in Romanian economy.

FDI structure in 2008 was as follows:

Participation to the capital – 2767 (30.7%)
Reinvested profit: 1756 (19.4%)
Intra-group credits: 4501 (49.9%).

In 2008 foreign direct investment financed about 53.5% of the current account deficit, as against 43.5% last year.

Moreover, in December 2008, Romania registered a 20.5% increase of monthly FDI flow (EURO 593 million), compared to the previous month (EURO 492 million), considering the economic crises and the experience of previous years which illustrate a lower monthly FDI flow towards the end of the year.
