Romania's development projects to be funded with € 1.5 bn from the European Union in 2008

Romania will receive 1.5 billion Euros this year for development programs according to Eugen Teodorovici, cabinet secretary of the Economy and Finance ministry (MEF).

Some 90 development programs worth 700 million Euros are slated to begin this year. The majority of the funds will be directed towards infrastructure works.

Environment projects will cost 550 million Euros while transportation projects are much more expensive exceeding 1 billion Euros. "We will start five environment projects in April this year," Teodorovici said.

"The main focus of the funds will be on developing the country's infrastructure", Eugen Teodorovici

Brussels will oversee projects of rehabilitation and expansion of water systems involving several counties. The total value of these projects will exceed 500 million Euros.

Previous E.U. Funding

Romania has received a total of 2.5 billion Euros in the period prior to and since joining the E.U. Of this amount, the agriculture sector has received almost 700 million Euros.
