Plans for new airport in Southern Bucharest

Construction works at the new airport to be built in Southern Bucharest could start next year and the business is likely to be fruitful only if developed through a public-private partnership, Transports Minister Ludovic Orban told NewsIn.

The government endorsed today the project to erect the new airport, the third in Bucharest.

The location of the new airport will be decided in six months after the feasibility study is carried out.

The new airport in Romania’s capital could be constructed 2 km far from the ring road of a small village in the outskirts of Bucharest, Orban said in June. The airport, to be erected in 2 years, will most likely be located near the village Adunatii Copaceni, the minister added.

This would be the third airport in Bucharest after OTOPENI and BANEASA (operating mostly low-cost flights.)

In the past few years several important airlines introduced flights from Romania, making the two airports too small to host them. Other cities in the country could also see airports constructed or modernized in the coming years.
